The Center for Mathematics and Culture is a research center dedicated to bridging the gap between mathematics and broader culture. Although mathematics is a pillar of the modern world, the field is all too often relegated to the margins of cultural life. Highly educated men and women, as well as students at all levels, are alienated from mathematics and openly proclaim they know nothing of it. This, we believe, has serious consequences for scientific literacy and the creation of an educated citizenry in a democratic society.
Our goal at the Center for Mathematics and Culture is to help correct this situation. Through Conferences, workshops, publications, and research grant, The Center will draw attention to the deep interconnections between mathematics and other fields of human engagement such as history, literature, and education. In doing so the Center will raise the public profile of mathematics, increase public knowledge and understanding of the field, and work with teachers to improve mathematical education.
